Power upgrades under way

More power is coming to Jamaica Plain thanks to upgrades from NSTAR, the electric utility company.

NSTAR is installing new equipment in Jackson Square and central JP that will more than triple the electrical capacity, up to 14,000 volts. Those upgrades will improve electrical service in all of JP, according to NSTAR spokesperson Michael Durand.

“We will better meet the current and future needs of our customers,” Durand said.

The work is related to neighborhood-wide power system improvements that began several years ago, following a plague of blackouts.

The current work is taking place along Minden and Centre streets in Jackson Square, and Green Street and Chestnut Avenue in central JP. The upgrades are expected to be complete by late fall.
