New gallery fills the gap

An art gallery will make its debut during the May 7 First Thursdays art event in a cool new space on South Street.

Photographer Brent Refsland, the Jamaica Plain artist who owns the new gallery, said he might call it The Alley. That’s exactly what the gallery space used to be—an alley between the buildings at 66 and 68 South St. that now house the Ferris Wheels Bike Shop and the McCormack & Scanlan real estate firm. Years ago, someone stuck a storefront onto the hallway-sized alley and finished the interior, including with decorative pressed-tin ceiling work. It was a hidden part of the former Herb’s TV shop for decades.

The debut exhibit will feature Refsland’s photography. It will host regular exhibits by other artists.
