More than 50 ‘read in’ for branches; all urged to attend April 6 meeting

Thanks to the more than 50 people who came out in the rain to the Connolly Branch Library “read-in” on March 23. People ranging in age from 2 to 92 showed their support for keeping all the neighborhood libraries open by making posters and writing messages for elected officials. The posters included two that said, “We Love Our Library” and “Don’t Close the Library—We Need to Learn.” Some other messages included:

“I come here every day after school while my parents are working. Where would I go after school?”

“The library is important because you can take books and the people help you do your homework.” (middle school student).

“Por que la biblioteca me ayuda con mi nieto en la educación y su tarea… [Because the library helps me with my grandson’s education and his homework…]” (abuela/grandmother)

“I use Wi-Fi on a daily basis and use reference books a lot. This branch serves a lot of people who can’t afford home Wi-Fi.”

“My third-graders love to come to the Connolly. It is a safe place… Many children don’t have books at home.” (teacher, Curley K-8).

We are working together with the Friends of the Jamaica Plain Branch to encourage a large turnout at the community meeting to be held on April 6 at the Curley Upper School, 493 Centre St., 6-7:30 p.m.

We are asking everyone to go and express what the library means to them and what they would miss if they close the doors. Spanish translation will be available.
