Not wearing bike helmet is a big risk

Thanks for placing the “ghost bike” picture on the front page (JP Gazette, April 30), as this tragic accident deserves more attention. Unfortunately, only the Boston Globe pointed out that Mr. Hunt was not wearing a helmet. I would add that he was attempting to pass a bus on a very dangerous stretch of Huntington Avenue. On the left of the bus were the trolley tracks, leaving him very little room to navigate safely.

I have survived 40 years of urban bicycling by not taking such risks. I regularly admonish helmet-less (mostly young) bikers that they should not take such risks. They seem to have no awareness of how much damage can happen to their brain from just a light strike on the pavement. Unfortunately, too many of them dismiss me as a busybody.
