Thanks for supporting local library

On behalf of the staff and Friends of the Connolly Branch Library, we would like to thank everyone who came to the Spring Dance Celebration and Open House on May 3.

Many thanks to La Piñata and the third-grade Curley School Dancers, who gave some terrific performances. These performances allowed us to highlight our newly installed sound system, purchased and paid for by the Friends.

This wonderful sound system is the accumulation of many years of hard work and funded by all of our book sales over the past few years. Thanks to everyone who has bought or donated any book to us. This new equipment will allow the staff to continue with programs like the weekly pre-school film program as well as allowing the development of additional community programs.

The Friends would also like to acknowledge the help and support of the entire Jamaica Plain and Boston community which came to the April meeting with Boston Public Library (BPL) officials at the Curley School and spoke so passionately for branch libraries. A big round of appreciation for local business MJ Audio that not only installed our terrific sound system but also brought microphones to the April meeting, which allowed library supporters to voice their concerns.

While no Jamaica Plain branches are scheduled to close this year, the future is uncertain. The impending closure of four branch libraries and the elimination/merger of departments at the main library will wreak devastation on services throughout the entire BPL system.

To that end, we encourage everyone who cares about the Boston Public Library to attend the City Council hearing on the Library’s budget on June 3 at 6 p.m. at City Hall to make their concerns known. Thank you again for your continuing support.
