Café closing

HYDE SQ.—June Bug Café plans to close its doors at the end of July, finishing a seven-year run at 403a Centre St.

June Bug owner June Nguyen told the Gazette she plans to try to find another location on Centre Street to reopen the coffee shop.

The 403a Centre Street address is in the same building that used to house the Bella Luna restaurant and Milky Way Lounge & Lanes nightclub. Those two businesses—owned by the same people—consolidated and moved to the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation-run Brewery Complex on Amory Street in 2009.

Landlord Mordechai Levin told the Gazette he has not yet found a new tenant for the cavernous former Milky Way space in the basement of the Hyde Square building. That space includes a bowling alley.

But he is hopeful that a new business will take up in the 403a space soon.

“My sense is that it will be quickly rented. It is a visible space on Centre Street,” he said. “But I have been wrong before.”

The new Haven restaurant recently opened in another space in the building. [See related article.]
