Letter: Whole Foods should hire people of color

It’s Saturday, Oct. 1, and I just came home from waiting in line outside the Connolly Library for the Whole Foods hiring event. I was keeping a friend company who was planning to attend. There were dozens and dozens of people there in a long, long line, and most of them were people of color—Latinos, Haitians, Africans, Arabs. It broke my heart to see how many of our neighbors are out of a job. If community means anything in JP, it seems to me that we should insist that most of the people Whole Foods hires for the JP store are people of color.

  • Whole Foods should hire the people who are best qualified for the jobs they are offering.  As a long time JP resident and a person of "color" what matters most to me is good service (not the color of the provider's skin.)  Your letter doesn't represent the views all JP residents.  Most of us simply want a high-quality supermarket staffed by friendly knowledgeable people.  I look forward to the opening and will shop there frequently.
