A local writer toured the White House garden and kitchens on Oct. 5 after winning a contest promoting First Lady Michelle Obama’s childhood health program.
Lisa Eisenbud, the founder of the online girls’ magazine “go GIRL global,” was one of 15 people nationwide to win a Twitter contest and score a White House invite.
Eisenbud said she got to tour the new garden—which includes figs and a beehive—and watch from afar as Obama oversaw local children picking food for cooking. She then toured the White House kitchens and met Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford.
“They were truly picking things out of the garden and preparing them,” including sweet potatoes as part of a state dinner, Eisenbud said.
Eisenbud said she was impressed to meet Comerford, the White House’s first woman chef, who balances the high-pressure job with raising a young daughter.
Less impressive were the kitchens themselves. “I worked in the restaurant business in Boston. There’s nothing unusual about them,” Eisenbud said.
Eisenbud was allowed to report on the visit for “go GIRL global,” which promotes positive education and self-esteem for girls. She spoke to the Gazette from Paris, where she was attending the “G(irls)20 Summit” event, which promotes the empowerment of girls and women worldwide.
