Homeless census results still missing

The City has yet to release its 2011 homeless census, despite the fact it released previous census results during the winter months. The census has been conducted for 32 straight years, with the last several showing a drop in the homeless population.

The City uses the census to help determine homeless programs and funding. The City began a new fiscal year July 1. It is not known how, without the census data, the City determined funding for the homeless programs.

Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) spokesperson Katinka Podmaniczky said in April that the delay might stem from the Emergency Shelter Commission, which handles the census, transitioning from City Hall to BPHC.

But it is now midsummer and City has yet to release the results. Podmaniczky did not respond to repeated calls for comment.
