Gym replaces martial arts studio

FOREST HILLS—A longtime landmark of the Forest Hills area, Yang’s Martial Arts Association at 38 Hyde Park Ave. has closed its Jamaica Plain doors and set up shop in Roslindale Village. Part of the space previously occupied is already home to a new crossfit gym, JP Crossfit.

Classes continue as scheduled at Yang’s new location. JP Crossfit, open since late last month, has a full morning and afternoon schedule of group training classes, owner Logan Miller told the Gazette.

“The dedication to traditional training and values continues,” Yang’s owner Ben Warner told the Gazette. “All that good stuff.”

The martial arts studio had been a JP anchor since 1986, Warner told the Gazette, when the original owner, the eponymous Dr. Jwing-Ming Yang relocated it from Huntington Avenue.

Since then, Yang has expanded his Boston studio into an international organization with 50 schools in 17 countries, including a large retreat center in California. Five years ago, Yang’s son Nicholas took over the studio and the organization, Warner said.

Warner had been a student at the studio since 1998 and when Nicholas Yang decided to move to California late last year, he approached Warner to keep the studio going.

This year, the Yangs sold the two buildings the studio occupied, so Warner found a new space on Basile Street in Roslindale, he said.

Yang’s website is ymaaboston.com. JP Crossfit’s website is jpcrossfit.com.
