Lynch may be in, Capuano out for Senate run

With John Kerry, the senior U.S. senator from Massachusetts, expected to be confirmed soon as the next U.S. secretary of state, elected officials are gearing up for another special election.

U.S. Rep. Edward Markey (5th District) has declared his intention to run, while U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch (8th District), who represents a portion of Jamaica Plain, is among other possible candidates. U.S. Rep. Mike Capuano (7th District), who represents some of Jamaica Plain, decided not to run after mulling the possibility.

Lynch told the Gazette through a spokesperson he is weighing a run for the Senate seat.

“I am giving serious consideration to a run for the United States Senate and am grateful for the support and encouragement I have received in recent days,” said Lynch. “As we await Senator Kerry’s confirmation hearings, I will continue to weigh my options and decide the best way to serve our communities.”

Meanwhile, Capuano nixed the possibility of running to focus on his work in the House.

“After careful consideration, I have decided not to enter the race for U.S. Senate,” said Capuano through a spokesperson. “Instead, I look forward to focusing on the important issues facing the new Congress. My current work in the House and whatever opportunities the future may hold, afford me the greatest honor of my life, fighting for the citizens of the Commonwealth.”

If Kerry is in fact confirmed, an interim senator would be appointed by Gov. Deval Patrick. Former U.S. Rep. Barney Frank has already thrown his name out there for that appointment. Within 145 to 160 days of Kerry vacating his position, a special election would take place to find his successor.
