Peace on Earth: Flowers planted in peace symbol shape at pond

PONDSIDE—Call it peace on Earth.

Daffodil flowers planted in the shape of a peace symbol are blooming bright yellow on an embankment at Jamaica Pond Park in what appears to be unofficial, guerrilla landscaping. Next to the peace symbol is what appears to be a yin-yang symbol of white and red tulips that did not grow in so well and may have been damaged.

The flowery symbols are on the hillside popular for wintertime sledding near Pinebank Field at the Jamaicaway and Perkins Street. Their position makes them obvious to anyone walking or biking on the path nearby.

They appeared approximately two weeks ago, resident and frequent park-goer Sandy Huckleberry told the Gazette. It is unknown who planted them.

The Boston Parks and Recreation Department did not plant the flowers, and also will not remove them, spokesperson Jacque Goddard told the Gazette.

“Both symbols will be permitted to remain,” Goddard said in an email. “Our employees will work around the [flowers] until they bloom no longer.”

Huckleberry said the Gazette the flowers are a welcome addition to the park.

“I don’t know who did it, but I just love seeing the blossoms on my way to my walk around the pond every morning,” Huckleberry said in an email. “Many thanks to the anonymous prankster!”
