One of the great things about Jamaica Plain is Roslindale.
The positive dynamic between us is part of each community’s identity.
Rozzie’s relatively lower real estate rates have made it a haven for ex-JP business owners, activists and artists who otherwise would be totally gone, to JP’s detriment.
Backed by the outstanding support of Mayor Menino’s triumphant brainchild, Roslindale Village Main Streets, that has empowered a business district of tremendous cultural diversity, as the Gazette reviews in this issue. That greatly complements central JP’s increasingly upscale, boutique businesses, with customers from both areas regularly visiting the other.
Rozzie also plays an unacknowledged role as JP’s chain-store sin-eater. It has been easier for local-business-minded JP to fend off the likes of Family Dollar when we all know we can go to the one already in Roslindale Village. And while a big-box store coming to JP would face protests, many of us have popped into the Rozzie Staples, which is not much farther from central JP than Jackson Square is.
JP wouldn’t be the same without Rozzie, and vice versa. That’s why it’s always fun to visit once again.

These are, at best, some serious backhanded compliments.
Wow, even for a JP Gaz peice, that was an outstandingly self-indulgent and over-entitled pile of class snobbery!
"Chain store sin-eater"? Gosh, thank godess that JP has never had any controversial big-box stores (cough, Whole Foods, cough), and is filled with only local indie stores like Payless Shoes, Stop-and-Shop, Rent-a-Center, McDonald's, Dunkin Donuts (two!), CVS (two!), 7-11, and T-mobile. Did I forget anyone? I'm sure I did.
Trouble with the reading comprehension? The phrase you quote was a swipe at JP hypocrisy, which apparently flew right over your head.
