Parklet to be installed next week

HYDE SQ.—Jamaica Plain’s parklet, one of Boston’s first four, will likely be installed Sept. 5 or 6 on Centre Street at Wyman street after repeated delays, Boston Transportation Department (BTD) Director of Planning Vineet Gupta told the Gazette this week.

A parklet is a small, semi-permanent public space that resembles a deck, created from two parking spaces. JP’s parklet will include tables and chairs, benches and planters.

The parklet was originally slated to be in place this spring, but had its location changed and the installation schedule repeatedly set back.

The parklet will be maintained by partner businesses. In Hyde Square’s case, that will be restaurant Tacos El Charro and Sonia’s Bridal & Quinceañera. Each parklet is costing the city between $15,000 and $25,000 to create and install.
