Route 39 bus stop upgrades delayed

The completion of the Route 39 bus improvement project has been delayed because drainage structures at some “bump-out” curb extensions could not be relocated, according to MBTA spokesperson Joe Pesaturo.

The project was expected to be substantially completed around Labor Day, Pesaturo previously told the Gazette.

The delay affects stops at Curtis Hall, 20 South St.; Centre Street at St. John Street; and Centre Street at Seaverns Avenue.

The Curtis Hall and St. John stops should be completed within a week, and the Seaverns stop before the end of the month, Pesaturo told the Gazette.

New bus signs will also be installed at the stops by the end of next month, according to Pesaturo. The signs must be first approved by the Boston Center for Independent Living (BCIL), which Pesaturo expects to happen soon. The MBTA and BCIL entered into a settlement to improve accessibility for people with disability in 2006.

The Route 39 is undergoing several changes, including the consolidation of some stops and improved amenities like new shelters and benches and “bump-out” curb extensions. The project is meant to speed service and improve accessibility.
