Walsh wins Mayor’s Office

Riding the support of labor unions and endorsements from key elected officials, state Rep. Marty Walsh narrowly defeated At-Large City Councilor John Connolly on Nov. 5 to become the next mayor of Boston. Mayor Thomas Menino is stepping down after 20 years in office.

Walsh, a labor leader who received an endorsement from Jamaica Plain’s At-Large City Councilor and former mayoral candidate Felix Arroyo, garnered around 52 percent of voters, or 72,514 votes, while Connolly collected 48 percent, according to the unofficial City results. About 38 percent of registered voters participated in the election.

In the race for the District 6 City Council seat, which covers most of Jamaica Plain, incumbent Matt O’Malley easily defeated challenger Luis Valerio. O’Malley, a JP resident, garnered 85 percent of voters, or 18,196 votes, while Valerio, a West Roxbury resident, collected 14 percent.

For the District 4 City Council seat, which covers the Woodbourne section of JP, along with parts of Roslindale, Dorchester and Mattapan, incumbent Charles Yancey cruised to victory over challenger Terrance Williams. Yancey, who also ran for mayor but was knocked out during the preliminary election, took 68 percent of voters, or 8141 votes, while Williams received 31 percent.

In the at-large City Council race, incumbents Ayanna Pressley and Stephen Murphy; former city councilor and 2009 mayoral candidate Michael Flaherty; and newcomer Michelle Wu each notched one of four spots. They beat out four other challengers.
