Urban Edge breaks ground on new project

JACKSON SQ.—Urban Edge, a nonprofit community development corporation, recently broke ground on the Jackson Commons project, an expansion of the its building at 1542 Columbus Ave.

When completed, Jackson Commons will be a three-story, 23,600-square-foot building with 37 affordable-housing units, 10,000 square feet of office space and 2,000 square feet of retail space.

“It’s great to see the community’s vision for Jackson Square becoming a reality,” Urban Edge Executive Director Chrystal Kornegay said in an email to the Gazette. “We look forward to the day when we can welcome new families into the Jackson Square community.”

She said that Urban Edge’s offices will remain in the one-story addition of the building during the construction and the organization will continue offering all services and activities. She said that construction is expected to be completed in spring 2015.

“Jackson Commons shows the resilience of our community to dream big and stick to it,” said Kornegay.

About 11 acres of land in Jackson Square is being redeveloped by a team that includes Mitchell Properties, the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation and Urban Edge. The first project, an apartment building at 225 Centre St., was recently completed.
