Bikers might soon be able to traverse the Arborway a little more easily, as the state is looking into installing bike lanes on the roadway.
Bill Hickey, spokesperson for the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), which manages the Arborway, said the department will start early in the next fiscal year to study the feasibility of installing bike lanes. The fiscal year begins July 1.
“We are proposing a traffic study of the Arborway, from Kelley Circle to Forest Hills,” said Hickey in an email to the Gazette. “It needs funding at present time, which the agency is working on. In the interim, shoulders [of the Arborway] will be widened in conjunction with the current resurfacing work.”
That shoulder-widening will be done by shifting the existing travel lanes, not by widening the roadway, Hickey said.

Cars move very fast here. I hope that they narrow the travel lanes and reduce the speed limit. More crosswalks for pedestrians would be nice too.
It would be more useful if it were built as a cycletrack, as many cars would park in the bikelane in order to access the Arboretum. Otherwise, great idea.
