JP Porchfest set to rock July 19

More than 30 bands are set to jam for the first annual Jamaica Plain Porchfest, which will kickoff tomorrow, July 19. The event will have bands play on the porches of houses throughout JP.

Marie Ghitman and Mindy Fried are organizing the music event, which is similar to the Somerville Porchfest.

“This is a first for the city, and we can feel the excitement – when we talk to people on the streets, as more volunteers step up to help because they love the idea of Porchfest, and when we follow the off-the-chart responses on social media,” said Fried in an email to the Gazette.

She said that the organizers have been “amazed and grateful” to people who are offering “their music, their porches and their practical support” for the event.

The organizers also will film a documentary of the Porchfest.

“We’re also working with a team of filmmakers who will be capturing the experience of Porchfest through three perspectives:  a community organizer, Betsaida Gutierrez; veteran musician and co-founder of the JP Music Festival, Rick Berlin; and a group of youths from Hyde Square Task Force,” said Fried.

Following the Porchfest, the Milky Way will host an after-party.
