Speed hump disappears in Hyde Sq.

A speed hump was removed in Hyde Square last fall during a construction project and still has not been replaced, according to Jamaica Plain resident Erik Berg.

The speed hump at 70 Day St. was one of several that were installed in the Hyde Square area about 15 years ago as part of a traffic-calming pilot program.

Berg said the incident is part of a larger issue: The lack of accountability for contractors who do not leave the streets as they found them after finishing their work.

Berg said he has contacted officials at BTD, but to no avail.

“It’s very frustrating,” said Berg.

Boston Transportation Department (BTD) did not respond to a request for comment.

Because of the high traffic volume on the area roads, residents a number of years ago worked hard for safer streets.

Berg said that that is especially important because of the many children in the neighborhood, noting that the Hennigan Elementary School is nearby. Berg said the speed humps “immeasurably improved” the situation, but the removal of one is a “step back.”

In a similar situation two weeks ago, he said, the City painted the remaining speed humps on Day Street. Contractors unpainted them two days later while they were doing work and have not repainted them.
