Franklin Park playground to get renovation

A Franklin Park playground will be renovated next year after the City’s Youth Participatory Budget (YPB) volunteers voted it as their first choice for action, Franklin Park Coalition Director Christine Poff told the Gazette.

Located across from Angell Street, the American Legion Highway playground was built when the then-mayor’s wife Angela Menino argued that the picnic site needed a place for children to play.

Earlier this year, the City launched the first youth participatory budgeting process in the country, which invites teens and young adults to decide how to spend $1 million of the city’s capital budget.

At a meeting earlier this month, the YPB committee set out some priorities “for swings, cool climbing things, etc.,” Poff said, and saw some equipment options.

At a Dec. 17 meeting, the committee will look at sample designs. The last meeting, slated for January, will see the final design presentation.
