Betsaida Gutierrez talks about how her black grandmother suffered racism during a Nov. 1 event to reinstall a “Black Lives Matter” banner at the First Baptist Church of Jamaica Plain. “Black Lives Matter” is the slogan behind nationwide protests against police brutality, especially against young African-Americans. The original banner was vandalized and later stolen. Kevin Whalen of the First Baptist Church said about 200 people attended. “Anyone there will tell you it was a rousing, spirited defense of ‘Black Lives Matter.’ A great cross-section of JP,” he said.
