MEMORIAL BRIDGE

Gov. Charlie Baker, local state Rep. Jeffrey Sanchez, local state Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz and others on Sept. 28 joined parents Carlos Arredondo and Victoria Foley to celebrate the renaming of Jamaicaway bridge over Route 9 on the Mission Hill/Jamaica Plain border in honor of Marine Lance Corporal Alexander S. Arredondo and his brother Brian Arredondo.
Marine Lance Corporal Alexander Arredondo was the oldest child of Carlos Arredondo and Victoria Foley. He joined the Marines in the early enlistment program in 2001. Deployed in January of 2003 with the first wave of Marines in Operation Iraqi Freedom, he was killed in Najaf, Iraq in 2004 at the age of 20 during his second deployment. Brian Arredondo was Alexander’s younger brother and suffered greatly after his death. Despite seeking assistance for depression, anxiety and grief, Brian died by suicide in 2011 at the age of 24.
