Elizabeth Van der Snoek
April 7, 1930 – June 2, June 2, 2019
Elizabeth Van der Snoek of Jamaica Plain, formerly of Scotia, NY, passed away at home on June 2after a long illness in the arms of her son, Michael.
She was a character, she was unique…She was the mother of 10 loving children. She devoted her life to her children in Scotia, NY to her final days in Jamaica Plain.
Betty was the eldest daughter of five, born to Percy and Mary Helen Van Etten. After being married for 25 years to Cas Bojanowski, she moved to Boston and Jamaica Plain. Briefly remarried and widowed, she became the doyenne of Today’s Bread in JP, holding court at the big back table. Betty was gracious and funny and definitely made an impression on all she encountered.
Each holiday she embraced with gusto. Halloween saw her giving out treats dressed as a witch or an angel, a mermaid or a pirate and even as a lobster.
When not clowning around, she led a group to paint pedestrian lines in unsafe intersections, among other minor civil disobediences. After open heart surgery, she did slow down a bit to enjoy her 18 grandchildren and now four great grandchildren. She also loved crab cakes and steamed clams, any dessert, and little babies.
Last weekend the large and growing family gathered on Cape Cod for a Celebration of Life and her burial at sea. She was beloved by all and will be missed.
If you can, in lieu of flowers etc., just call your Mom.
