Music lovers will not want to miss Dedham Choral Society’s live concert on Friday, May 6, at 8:00 p.m. at Holy Name Church, 1689 Center St., West Roxbury.
Originally scheduled for spring 2020, “Bravo Beethoven!” was to celebrate the musical genius’s 250th birthday, but alas! Covid-19 caused its cancellation. Under the baton of longtime director Jonathan Barnhart of Jamaica Plains and rehearsal pianist Julia Scott Carey, the DCS chorus, ac-companied by soloists Katrina Holden (soprano), Caroline Olsen (mezzo soprano), Brendan Buckley (tenor), Ulysses Thomas (bass-baritone), and a full orchestra, will perform the concert in celebration of the composer’s 252nd birthday. The main composition is the Mass in C Major, Opus 86. Two smaller works, the first movement of the “Moonlight” Sonata (arranged by a Beethoven con-temporary) and the rarely performed “Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage” open the program.
Fifty choral members from 20 communities in greater Boston have been rehearsing in-person since February for this concert. DCS prides itself on being a “musical family,” not only by performing great choral works together, but also by fostering a supportive network of social relationships that value both long-term members of our inter-generational ensemble and new singers.
