Thanks for support for Relay For Life

I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the many individuals who attended and supported this year’s American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Boston at English High School Track and Field in June. More than 200 people participated, helping to raise more than $35,000 for the society’s fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer, here and throughout the world. While the current economic climate continues to make fundraising more challenging for everybody, I am continually inspired by the dedication of all of my fellow volunteers who have redoubled their efforts to ensure this year’s success.

Tobin was an excellent city councilor

July 30 was City Councilor John Tobin’s last day as a member of the Boston City Council. While I am a new member of the Boston City Council, I have lived in the district Tobin represented from the beginning of his time in office. Tobin had the challenge of replacing Maura Hennigan, who I feel served the residents of District 6 very well prior to leaving her post to run for an at large seat on the Boston City Council. Tobin met that challenge and many others head on.

Mayor is right: It’s time to finish building’s construction

The time for the completion of 615-619 Centre St. project is long overdue. Mayor Thomas Menino should be commended for his personal intervention to get the project moving (JP Gazette 8/13, “Mayor: Time for 615-619 Centre rehab to move”). The questionable fire which destroyed the building happened exactly four years ago. Since then the property has been a blight on the neighborhood. The community and city graciously approved an increase in the size of the building and what we got in return is an eyesore, safety hazard and nuisance—accompanied by an overflowing dumpster to boot.

Mass. economy growing faster than US overall

The University of Massachusetts reported two weeks ago that the Massachusetts economy is growing at twice the rate of the rest of the nation. Our economic success following a global fiscal crisis is not by accident. It is the direct result of Gov. Deval Patrick’s strong and effective leadership during difficult times. The Patrick-Murray administration has created more than 45,000 jobs during the past six months as the state’s unemployment rate continues to decrease.

Helping kids in Ghana this summer

A tiresome flight across the world was worth it once I arrived in Ghana on July 10. I was there to do community service with kids in two different schools. I also interacted with kids in a foster home as well as at an orphanage. The trip was with a program called Global Leadership Adventures (GLA). The program that gave me the opportunity to travel and get into GLA was Summer Search.

Community meeting needed about Centre/South proposals

The Centre/South Street Corridor Advisory Group, along with Boston Redevelopment Authority and Boston Transportation Department staff and consultants McMahon Associates, have worked very hard for a y

The right Mass. path to zero waste

Every ten years, Massachusetts revises its plan for waste management, and the time has come for us to decide whether we are going to prioritize burying and burning or reduce, reuse and recycle.

Thanks for making hike a huge success

Here at the Elizabeth Stone House (ESH or Stone House), we just completed the annual Wilderness Heals pledge hike, and thanks to our hikers, team leaders, sponsors and volunteers, it was our best ev

Power also makes some confused

They say that power corrupts, but does it also make one stupid?

Funding falls short for seniors

It was not uncommon during the Great Depression to see long lines of unemployed workers waiting for bread and soup.
