Power Outage Report

A large section of Egleston Square went dark for up to 2.5 hours on the afternoon of March 6, leaving some residents complaining of the cold. Affected areas included Chilcott Place and Washington and Boylston streets.

NSTAR spokesperson Mike Durand said the outage, which affected about 1,400 customers, was caused by high winds moving a wire out of place on a pole on Marmion Street. The wire didn’t fall down, but it shifted out of a protective bracket that keeps it out of contact with the pole. That shift essentially tripped a giant circuit breaker in the NSTAR system.

Durand said about 400 customers had power restored in about 1 hour 20 minutes as electricity was re-routed around the problem. The remainder of the area got power back in about 2.5 hours.

You can report power outages to the Gazette at [email protected] or 524-2626 ext. 222. Always report them directly to NSTAR at 1-800-592-2000. The NSTAR line will also tell you the cause of an outage when it becomes known.
