Life sentence for local man’s murder

A Mattapan man was found guilty of first-degree murder last week in the 2003 shooting death of a Jamaica Plain man outside a baby shower.

David Nicanor Diaz Perez, 25, was immediately sentenced to life in prison without parole.

During an altercation outside the baby shower in Roslindale on March 23, 2003, Perez pulled a handgun and fired it several times, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office. Quirico Romero Jr., 19, was shot in the back while fleeing the area. He died at a hospital.

Perez was also convicted of unlawful handgun possession. He was previously tried for the shooting last year, but that trial ended in a hung jury.

“People who had a chance to know him loved him,” said family friend Madeleine Tejada about Romero in court. “His memory will live with us.”
