Foot Locker closes

JP CENTER—Foot Locker, the athletic gear store at 678 Centre St., “closed for good” last week, according to a handwritten sign posted on its door. It is unclear what might next fill a space that is one of Centre Street’s largest storefronts.

The New York headquarters of Foot Locker, an international chain store, did not return a Gazette phone call for this article. The Gazette was unable to contact the owner of the property, which is listed in city assessing records as a real estate trust based in Newton Centre.

The storefront was once a Woolworth department store before that chain went out of business in 1997. Foot Locker, which was a division of Woolworth at the time, took over the spot that year. The entire Woolworth Corporation eventually became Foot Locker, Inc.
