Chang-Díaz brave to vote to nix 2 holidays

Our community should recognize the service done for us and for all taxpayers by local state Sen. Sonia Chang-Díaz. She recently joined a brave crew of 12 Democrats who voted, along with the full quintet of Re-publicans, to eliminate Suffolk County’s Bunker Hill Day and Evacuation Day, otherwise known as the “hack holidays.” They or rather, we, still lost in the Senate, 22-17.

In this era of budget crisis, the estimated $5 million to $10 million (or more) loss of productivity re-sulting from these holidays can hardly be sanctioned, except by politicians still on a roll. Bravo, Sonia!

Local Reps. Liz Malia and Jeffrey Sánchez and the entire Boston delegation except for one voted on the House version later—where the measure lost in a tie, 78-78—to retain these bogus holidays.

Bogus, too, in that it was the British who took the ground at the Battle of Bunker Hill! Heck, the bat-tle didn’t even happen there; that was Breed’s Hill.
