Bank robber heads to prison

JP CENTER—A man who robbed Mt. Washington Bank last year was sentenced to 10 to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty last month, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

Royal Benjamin Jr., 49, was reported as homeless at the time of the June 2009 robbery. After asking for change at the 515 Centre St. bank, Benjamin jumped onto the counter and stole about $4,000 in cash from a drawer. Benjamin was captured a short time later, when police officers spotted him running through a parking lot in Jackson Square’s Bromley-Heath housing development and tossing the cash into a Dumpster.
