Whole Foods Market today released the following letter (in English and Spanish) to the Jamaica Plain community. For more on Whole Foods and the neighborhood, see the June 24 Gazette.
Dear Jamaica Plain Residents,
I want to thank you for being so engaged in the discussion around our new Jamaica Plain Whole Foods Market. Many of you took the time to attend the June 2nd community meeting or write to me with your feedback. I want you to know that your letters have been read and your input has been heard.
Though the meeting did not end the way that any of us had hoped, we still feel that it was a productive evening filled with valuable dialogue with our future neighbors. We look forward to the meetings we will be having with community groups in the coming weeks. We are also awaiting the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council Ad Hoc Committee’s report. We are appreciative of all of the feedback that we receive as it helps us to create the store that best serves the community.
Those of you who attended the meeting got the opportunity to meet our Jamaica Plain Store Team Leader, Mike Walker, and Associate Store Team Leader, Wanda Hernandez. The emails that they have been receiving have offered great suggestions for ways we can support the local community as well as what products you are eager to find on our shelves.
SITE UPDATE: Over this summer you will see a lot of activity at the store site as we continue the extensive project of bringing the building up to code. The interior of the building has been cleared out and we will be completing the new roof in the coming weeks. It is very exciting to see the store beginning to take shape!
HIRING: As we approach the late fall opening, we will host our hiring event in the store parking lot. This event will be advertised in the local media as well as on Facebook and Twitter. As was mentioned in the community meeting, the Jamaica Plain store will have very limited employee parking, therefore we are hopeful that our store presents employment opportunities for folks who live within walking or biking distance of the store, or via public transportation.
COMMUNITY: It has been wonderful to hear from a number of non-profit organizations and community groups in Jamaica Plain. We are looking forward to the opportunity to support them with our community give-back programs.
We are also continuing to pursue the possibility of hosting a farmers market in our parking lot this summer. We love to support our local farmers and the opportunity to offer easy access to healthy, local produce is at the heart of who we are! Stay tuned for more updates on that.

Estimados Residentes de Jamaica Plain,
Quiero agradecerles por participar de una manera tan activa en el diálogo sobre la tienda nueva de Whole Foods Market en Jamaica Plain. Muchos de ustedes se tomaron el tiempo para asistir a la reunión comunitaria que se llevó a cabo el 2 de Junio, mientras que otros me han enviado su comentarios por escrito. Quiero informarles que hemos leído todas sus cartas y sus opiniones han sido escuchada.
Aunque la reunión no tuvo el final que habíamos esperado, consideramos que fue una tarde productiva durante la cual logramos dialogar con nuestros futuros vecinos. Esperamos por las reuniones que sostendremos con los grupos comunitarios durante las próximas semanas. También estamos en espera de recibir el reporte del Comité Ad Hoc del Consejo del Vecindario de Jamaica Plain. Valoramos los comentarios que recibimos de todos ustedes, ya que estos nos ayudan a desarrollar una tienda que mejor sirva las necesidades de la comunidad.
Las personas que asistieron a la reunión tuvieron la oportunidad de conocer a Mike Walker y a Wanda Hernández, los Líderes del Equipo de Tienda de Jamaica Plain. Ellos han recibido un gran número de correo electrónico con sugerencias sobre cómo podemos apoyar a la comunidad local y cuáles son los productos que ustedes desean ver en nuestra tienda.
Actualización del edificio: Durante el verano ustedes podrán ver una gran actividad en el local de la tienda, a medida que continuamos con el proyecto de remodelación del edificio con fin de ponerlo a código. El interior del edificio ha sido despejado y en las próximas semanas terminaremos la instalación del techo nuevo. ¡Es muy emocionante ver cómo la tienda comienza a tomar forma!
¿Interesado en trabajar?: Cuando estemos cerca de la apertura a finales del otoño, realizaremos un evento de contratación de personal en el estacionamiento de la tienda. Daremos a conocer la fecha del evento en los medios locales y a través de Facebook y Twitter. Tal y como lo mencionamos durante la reunión comunitaria, la tienda de Jamaica Plain tendrá un estacionamiento muy limitado para los empleados; por lo tanto, esperamos que nuestra tienda represente una oportunidad de empleo para las personas que vivan cerca de la tienda y puedan llegar a trabajar caminando, en bicicleta ó por transportación publica.
La communidad: Ha sido maravilloso recibir noticias de distintas organizaciones sin fines de lucros y grupos comunitarios de Jamaica Plain. Esperamos tener la oportunidad de apoyar a estas organizaciones a través de nuestros programas de “devolver” a la comunidad.
También seguimos explorando la posibilidad de realizar “mercados agrícolas” durante el verano en el estacionamiento de la tienda. Nos encanta apoyar a los agricultores locales y ofrecer a nuestros clientes un acceso fácil a las frutas y verduras saludables. ¡Esto es la base de lo que representa nuestra compañía! Pronto les brindáremos más información al respecto.
