Arboretum Place construction begins

Construction for a new Harvest Co-op is already under way, in anticipation of a September 2012 opening.

The new Harvest and possibly a Commonwealth Cooperative Bank will be housed at the Arboretum Place development on Washington Street, just south of Ukraine Way.

Harvest General Manager Mike St. Clair said in a Sept. 21 presentation to the JP Business and Professional Association that the new Washington Street location should be about twice the size of the current South Street store—about 8,000 square feet—with about twice the selection.

Bulk foods—grains and cereals—for example, currently have 16 feet of shelf space in the South Street store, and St. Clair said he intends to have 30 feet of shelf space in the new store.

The South Street store would remain open and offer a more limited selection, St. Clair added.

One of the two planned parking lots would be exclusively for Harvest customers and would accommodate 20 spots, two of them for handicapped users, said Edward Forte, from Forte Architecture + Design.

Street parking would also be added, as well as bike racks.
