EGLESTON SQ.—Incumbent Tito Jackson and political newcomer Sheneal Parker will be the District 7 candidates for city council following their first- and second- place finishes in the district preliminary election Sept. 27.
Jackson received 76 percent of the 2,467 votes cast. Parker got 11.1 percent. The other candidates, Althea Garrison and Roy Owens, won 8.8 and 3.5 percent, respectively.
“We’re very happy about the results and what they mean,” Jackson told the Gazette. “I think we’ve been focusing on the right things and making sure economic developments that occur in District 7 benefit the people.”
“Considering this is my first race for political office, I think it went well, but there’s more work to be done,” Parker told the Gazette. “Everything in my life has always been a challenge…I’ll just continue to educate the community about who I am.”
District 7 is mostly based in Roxbury, but includes part of Egleston Square. It also includes parts of Dorchester, the Fenway and the South End.
The other city councilors who represent JP—District 6 Councilor Matt O’Malley, who represents most of the neighborhood, and District 8 Councilor Mike Ross, who represents part of Hyde Square—are running unopposed this year. That means no preliminary was held in either of those districts.
Jackson was elected in a special election earlier this year to replace former City Councilor Chuck Turner.
Parker, a Fenway resident and single mother, is a Boston Public School teacher and small business owner who has served on a host of community boards, including as president of the Fenway Community Development Corporation’s board of directors.
The final election, which will pit Jackson against Parker and will decide the other council races, will be held Nov. 8.
