Old Christmas a ‘Delight’ at concert

The Delight Consort will be “Welcoming Old Christmas” in a concert of Renaissance and Baroque holiday music played on period instruments at the Loring-Greenough House on Dec. 18.

The group is named for the Delight, a ship in the fleet of Newfoundland colonizer Sir Humphrey Gilbert, which sank on a sand bar in 1583 due to navigational error. The group claims that the navigator was distracted by musicians who had been brought on board to charm any natives and beguile them into handing over any riches.

The program will include Christmas music of Tomás Luis de Victoria, who died 400 years ago this year and was the most famous composer of the 16th century Golden Age in Spain; and works by Juan Bautista Cabanilles, a Spanish Baroque composer. The group also will perform brass music from Renaissance Italy and Germany, and a “Sonata from Wales in Imitation of Bird Song.”

Members of the Delight Consort include Judith Conrad (harpsichord); Frank Fitzpatrick (recorder, sackbut); Otto Guzman (cello, cornett, recorder); and Paul Ukleja (cornett, recorder, Irish tin whistle).

The program is part of the Sundays Afternoon at the ’Greenough House series and is followed by an afternoon tea where the audience can meet the musicians.

The concert will be held at 3 p.m. at the Loring-Greenough House, a 1760 house museum at 12 South St. in Monument Square. Admission is $15 ($10 students/seniors). Reservations are suggested. For more information, call 617-524-3158 or email [email protected].
