Editorial: Centers minus community?

What is a community center without the community?

We’re about to find out, as ludicrous, abrupt rental hikes at the Hennigan Community Center drive successful JP youth programs out of the neighborhood, and perhaps out of business.

This looks like another way to balance the books on the backs of the disadvantaged, and it is sure playing out that way right now. The Hennigan Center is poised to be a rental hall for rich suburbanites.

Evicting youth groups that can’t pay is $25 an hour in one of the City’s neediest neighborhoods is not what Jamaica Plain is about. It’s not what Boston is about. It’s not what the Menino administration is about.

The mayor should step in immediately and make sure the community centers are about our community.
