VA hospital builds garage

The Veterans Affairs medical center is constructing a five-story, 500-space parking garage on its 150 S. Huntington Ave. campus.

Work began in April and will last about a year, according to VA Boston Healthcare System spokesperson Diane Keefe.

“The new garage should alleviate the parking congestion on the neighboring streets and traffic back-up onto S. Huntington Avenue,” Keefe said in an email to the Gazette.

The $8 million garage is being built on the site of a 100-space surface parking lot, which has been closed and bulldozed, and alongside an existing garage. It will offer free parking for veterans who visit the medical center.

The VA gave no public notice of its project except for a notice on its website at boston.va.gov shortly before work began.

“Neighborhood meetings have not yet been scheduled, but may take place if the need arises,” Keefe said.
