August Noise JP, a series of nine surprise street concerts that are announced only just before they happen, is returning to Jamaica Plain this month for its second year. The first concert is slated for Weds., Aug. 1.
The concerts are intended to “bring the joy of unexpected music into everyday life,” said series founder and JP resident Beth McDonald in an email to the Gazette.
A wide range of performers are lined up to perform in this year’s series, ranging from pop rock to a brass quintet. McDonald is a musician herself, specializing in the tuba.
Performance locations last year included the Hyde Square rotary and the Jamaica Pond Park boathouse. McDonald said that August Noise concerts in public places operate under street musician guidelines, and that most are planned for private land with the owners’ permission.
Boston Parks and Recreation Department spokesperson Jacque Goddard said that August Noise notified the City about its concert plans last year. “We haven’t heard from them this year,” she said.
