Beetle Busters

(Gazette Photo by John Ruch) (from left) Lindsay Nystrom and Jessi Flynn of the state Department of Conservation and Recreation and Jonathan Hnatiuk of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) peer through binoculars at a backyard tree for signs of the Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) from the driveway of J.P. Licks at 659 Centre St. on Aug. 17. No new cases of the invasive, tree-killing beetle have found since a small infestation was discovered in JP in 2010, but the USDA workers continue to hunt it. This is the active season for the ALB, a large black beetle with white spots and long antennae. For more info, see beetlebusters.info.
