JPNC seeks new members

The Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council (JPNC) has five vacant seats and is welcoming any nominees interested in joining the council to attend its Nov. 27 meeting, according to chair Ben Day.

The JPNC is an elected community organization that advises City government about local issues. It reviews zoning and licensing requests and serves as a forum for any type of public issue. Anyone 16 and older who lives in JP or runs a business or nonprofit in JP is eligible for a council seat.

Most of the seats became vacant in recent months as members moved or had other personal issues, Day said. Another vacancy came last month when a member resigned over a leadership dispute with Day and other members related to their protest of the 161 S. Huntington Ave. development.

The vacancies are from all over the neighborhood, so anyone eligible is welcome to apply. Members should present themselves at the Nov. 27 meeting. The JPNC then will vote to appoint any new members at the December and January meetings. The council term is expected to run until September 2013, when there will be an election.

The Nov. 27 meeting is slated for 7 p.m. at the Julia Martin House, 90 Bickford St.
