Curley student shot in Roxbury

A 13-year-old student at Jamaica Plain’s Curley K-8 School was shot and seriously wounded in Roxbury on Jan. 11, reportedly while walking to choir practice at his church.

The victim was widely named in major media, but the Gazette generally does not name juvenile crime victims. The Boston Police Department (BPD) described the victim as in “critical but stable condition” in a Jan. 12 press release. BPD has not announced any suspects or motive in the shooting.

The boy is an eighth-grader at the Curley at Centre and Pershing streets, according to Genevieve Day, co-chair of the school’s Student Parent Council.

“We are reaching out to the family to offer any support we can,” Day said.

Boston Public Schools (BPS) spokesperson Matt Wilder declined to comment on any aspect of the shooting. But, he added, after any “horrible incident,” BPS “would make sure any additional resources” are available at an affected school.

The Berea Seventh-day Adventist Church in Dorchester, which the victim attends, will hold a prayer service for him and for “peace in the community” on Weds., Jan. 16 at 7 p.m., according to a church spokesperson. The church is at 108 Seaver St.

Anyone with information about the shooting can contact BPD Homicide Unit detectives at 617-343-4470 or anonymously by calling 1-800-494-8477 or by texting “TIP” to 27463.
