A new Jamaica Plain Business and Professional Association (JP BAPA) initiative called JP Shines to keep local streets clean will kick off April 11.
“We’re launching it around the Boston Shines effort,” said Kim Mitchell, owner of Boing! JP’s Toy Shop at 667 Centre St. “We hope this is a long-term initiative.”
Boston Shines is an annual citywide street cleaning initiative that will take place April 26 and 27 this year.
The JP Shines campaign will ask shop owners to pledge to clean their storefronts and gutters daily to maintain a higher standard of cleanliness in the neighborhood.
“We’re trying to change the culture within JP, [for shop owners] to be responsible for the front of their building, which will hopefully prevent litter,” Mitchell said. “Right now, JP is so filthy.”
JP BAPA will offer free brooms and dustpans to shop owners as well as a sticker to those who have signed the JP Shines pledge.

Everyone loves a clean house, a clean bed, etc. Since people really love to live in cleanliness, they have to practice those good habits outside as well. Litter barrels need to be placed along the streets to give it a place to go.
The European merchants know they have to clean in front of their stores every day if they want customers. So it is the same every where.
