The Casey Arborway project remains delayed, with a decision from the state Historic Commission (MHC) holding up the project.

The state Department of Transportation (MassDOT) needs approval from MHC for a redesign of Shea Circle at the Arborway and Morton Street into an intersection called Shea Square. The MHC has repeatedly requested design alternatives and more proof for altering the historic state parkway. The back-and-forth has already delayed the overall Casey Arborway project’s start date once.

In November, MassDOT said at a community advisory board meeting that the project was expected to be put out to bid by the end of this month.

“At this time, there is no word back yet from the MHC,” MassDOT spokesperson Michael Verseckes told the Gazette earlier this month.

Repeated Gazette calls to MHC spokesperson Brian McNiff were not returned.

The option to create Shea Square was originally created to reduce the high rate of vehicle crashes on the rotary.
