Editorial: Congratulations to Arredondo

Congratulations to Carlos Arredondo and his new friend, Jeff Bauman, on being invited by the First Lady to the president’s State of the Union speech. Both are heroes of the Boston Marathon bombing in their own rights, and their friendship is a testament to the triumph of good will over cowardly violence.

Arredondo, a well-known local figure, represents some of the best instincts in JP’s activism, from the peace movement to the Occupy movement. It should be remembered why Arredondo was at the marathon that bloody day: He and his wife Mélida were supporting a fund-raiser for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

It is no exaggeration to say that the president and many members of Congress could learn a lot from Carlos. We are glad, at least, that the First Lady chose to recognize him alongside Bauman in this national limelight.
