Gunshot victim was Hennigan student

A 9-year-old boy who was shot and killed in Mattapan, allegedly by his older brother, was a Hennigan Elementary School student, according to Boston Public Schools spokesperson Brian Ballou.

The Hennigan School is located at 200 Heath St. in Jamaica Plain.

“Counselors are at the school and are available for any students or staff,” Ballou said in an email to the Gazette on Feb. 10.

According to bpdnews.com, the Boston Police Department (BPD) responded on Feb. 7 to a report of a person shot at 617 Morton St. in Mattapan. Officers found a 9-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His 14-year-old brother was arrested shortly thereafter.

“Based on the evidence at the scene and statements by individuals, including the juvenile, investigators believe the boy was handling the firearm recklessly when it discharged,” stated the police report.

The 14-year-old is charged with involuntary manslaughter and illegal possession of a firearm.

The boys’ names have not been released due to their ages.
