Editorial: Thanks to longtime leaders

Two of JP’s great neighborhood leaders will retire this month. Both are the sorts of leaders whose name you may never have heard, but whose work has touched your JP life.

Laura Foner, the children’s librarian at Hyde Square’s Connolly Branch Library, has helped educate and delight generations of kids—English-speaking and Spanish-speaking—with outstanding programs. An experienced activist, she also fought to keep libraries open for such unsung services when the city tried to shutter some.

First Church UU in Monument Square is a JP landmark, and Rev. Terry Burke’s longtime leadership there has matched that historic promise. A beloved minister and a friend to other local churches, Burke also helped First Church transform into a vital community venue for such events at the JP Forum.

We are sorry to see them move on. But we also know their contributions will resonate to JP’s benefit for generations to come. Thank you, Laura. Thank you, Terry.
