Hair salon doubles as piano lounge

Three years after adding its chairs to Centre Street’s Soleil Salon, We Are Hair is expanding into the entertainment business with regular Thursday piano and open mic nights.

Owner Richard Repetta told the Gazette that the expansion stemmed from his own long history as an actor, singer and director in the Boston area—and the fact he had a baby grand piano just sitting at home.

Then, one day, he had a conversation with pianist friend Chris Holownia, who mentioned his wish for a piano bar in JP, and “our worlds collided,” Repetta said. We Are Hair began the entertainment nights a few weeks ago.

“We have been hosting on average 30-plus people each Thursday. Some sing, some just come to listen. We encourage people to bring beverages and snacks, and we ask for a donation to cover the cost of the pianist,” he said of the recent entertainment experiment.

“It was a way for me to merge my two worlds together and reach out beyond our clientele to the greater community,” he said.

Performance nights are Thursdays, 8 to 10 p.m., at Soleil Salon at 708 Centre St. Repetta himself will be performing Nov. 6.
