Event celebrates Jamaica Pond, birthday of supporter

First Church in Jamaica Plain, Unitarian Universalist in Monument Square will host an event March 1 to celebrate Jamaica Pond and one of its biggest supporters, Gerry Wright, who is turning 80 years old.

Wright is the founder of Friends of Jamaica Pond and the “Olmsted 2022” project, an effort to spur environmental programs to coincide with the 200th birthday of Emerald Necklace designer Frederick Law Olmsted. Wright also frequently portrays Olmsted in one-man shows and local events.

Wright said he is “excited” for the event, which will feature music, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department Commissioner Chris Cook handing out awards and talk about protecting and preserving nature at Jamaica Pond, including Hellenic Hill.

“People look at me and say, ‘you’re 80?’ I certainly don’t feel it,” said Wright.
