Post office resolves lease situation

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has resolved its lease situation over the Jamaica Plain post office at 655 Centre St, allowing the store to remain at its current location.

The USPS had been considering moving or downsizing since early in the year, while it negotiated with property owner Bulfinch Companies. The lease was set to expire at the end of April.

“We are all set. Lease signed. We will be staying,” said USPS spokesperson Maureen Marion said in an email to the Gazette.

Several local elected officials—City Councilor Matt O’Malley, local state Reps. Jeffrey Sánchez and Liz Malia and state Sen. Sonia Chang-Díaz—sent a signed letter in January to both parties asking them to resolve negotiations and offering their help in doing so.

The JP Post Office is dedicated to Alexander Arredondo, a Marine killed in the Iraq War who is the son of well-known peace activist Carlos Arredondo.
