Man surrenders on 2003 gun charges

A South Boston man last month turned himself in on 12-year-old gun charges related to a threatening incident near Hyde Square’s Mozart Park.

Wellington Matos, 34, was wanted on a warrant for assault with a dangerous weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammo, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

The charges date to March 8, 2003, when a man reported that someone in a car pointed a shotgun at him and racked a round into its chamber as he stood at Centre and Mozart streets. Boston Housing Authority police officers followed the car to Edge Hill and Gay Head streets. Matos was the driver and had a pistol-grip shotgun resting between his legs, prosecutors claim. The DA’s Office alleges that a loaded .38-caliber handgun and a bag of shotgun shells also were found in the car.

Three passengers in the vehicle were questioned and released, while Matos was charged. He was arraigned in court, but then failed to appear at further court appearances, the DA’s Office said.

Matos turned himself in at Roxbury District Court on May 29, where a judge imposed $5,000 bail and ordered him to wear a GPS monitoring device. He is scheduled to return to court on June 17.
